The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed appreciation to Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State over payment of arrears of salaries of workers in the state.
This was contained in a letter signed by the NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba, and addressed to the Bauchi State governor, a copy made available to newsmen yesterday.
The letter which read in parts, noted:
“I bring to you compliments from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and to con vey to you on behalf of the entire Nigeria workers our appreciation over the payment of outstanding salaries and allowances owed workers in Bauchi State”
The NLC president recalled that the National Administrative Council of the union had on March 19, 2015, set up a task force to pursue payment of salary of arrears owed workers by some state governments.
“Report reaching us from our task force team and the State Council of Congress indicates that while other states are struggling to upset between four to seven months outstanding salaries and allowances, the case of Bauchi was different and we wish to commend you for honouring your electoral promises to Bauchi State Workers,” Wabba said.
It urged all and sundry to put hands on deck to rebuild the image of the state government to earn the trust and confidence of the entire citizenry.
The Union implore the State Governors to rethinks governance and further urged them to summon the courage to black leakages, financial recklessness and fight corruption head on opining that
“this notion underpins the inability of State Government to pay salaries and allowances as at when due and implement laudable development projects that will impact positively on the lives of your people.”
It however, warned that
“the Congress would not tolerate any default in payment of wages and might be compelled to engage state governments that deliberately default in the payment of salaries and allowances of our members as at when due.”
The NLC said that the working class is hopeful that the economy situation will improve while expressing optimism that the challenges confronting them were not insurmountable but would be achieved with sincere commitment.
