The firework fragment bounced off the bonnet into Ferhan’s face as he walked past on the pavement.Onlookers and car passengers called an ambulance who took him to Liverpool Royal Hospital, where doctors tried to save his eye.
Ferhan’s brother Fatih, who lives and works in Toxteth, said: “The people in the car could see he was suffering so they helped him and called the ambulance.”
He was taken into surgery on Saturday where doctors removed a large chunk of plastic that had become lodged in his eye. But they had to remove his left eye because of the damage done.
Restaurant owner Fatih said: “The doctors told me there was no way to fix his eye. It was absolutely destroyed. You can’t imagine how bad it is.
“I have to keep telling him: ‘You still have one eye’. I’m trying to make him calm down, but you can guess how he feels.
“The doctors said it is lucky the firework didn’t explode in his face. If it had exploded, my brother would have been dead.”
The terrible accident also came just days after Ferhan celebrated his birthday.
Fatih, 28, said: “His birthday was a very happy moment, and then this is an extremely sad moment. He is only a young person. He is just starting his life.
“When this kind of stuff happens you get a shock. I am so angry and I want people to know about the dangers of fireworks.
“I want to raise my voice about it and I want people to hear it.”
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed the force had received a report about the “tragic accident”.
The force spokeswoman said there was no suggestion of criminal activity and said the source of the firework was unknown.
